Beating Hail With Auto Glass Repair

Large hail ice balls on car hood after heavy summer storm

With the recent hail storms passing through the Sun City, many people have noticed hail damage to their homes and on their prized rides. Hail is a major inconvenience, and can even be dangerous when under the right circumstances.

Here at Sergio Lewis, we understand that Mother Nature doesn’t always have the best gifts for your vehicle. In this article, we thought we’d briefly discuss why you should get your glass repaired as soon as possible.

How Hail Hurts Your Glass

Depending on the size, velocity, destination, hail can cause a wide range of damage to your vehicle and glass.

The smallest pieces of hail, ranging from mothball to grape-sized, will usually just cause scratches or nicks to your car. In some cases, they can cause significant fractures, but rarely full breaks. Once the hail reaches any larger than that, there’s a good chance that it will shatter glass or at least cause significant damage.

Protecting Your Car In a Hail Storm

If you’re driving in a hail storm, you should immediately reduce your speed (safely of course) and increase the car length between you and the nearest car by two or three car lengths. Your low beams should be on for the best visibility.

If you are able to, try to get off of the road but stay in your vehicle. If hail can shatter glass and dent metal, it will hurt you or your passengers. While you wait out the storm, using a blanket or jacket to shield your face and extremities would be a great idea.
